Let’s pair up authors like their characters in a movie:

Tama Janowitz and Dave Eggers

“Wild People”

– Indie film stumbling and bumbling protagonist meets rock and roll 80s wild child. They’d run into each other as he’s looking for jobs (being new to the city and hailing from the suburbs) and accidentally lands a job at a record store that is much too cool for him. She’d give him advice but also bust his balls a lot and he’d soften her up a bit. I give the movie a #3 box office spot. The ending would probably be weak.

Jay McInerney and Naomi Wolf

“Lost”

– McInerney and Ellis are best friends. Ellis is dating smarty pants Naomi Wolf. McInerney and Wolf fall in love behind Ellis’ back, as Ellis fails to see the intellect in Wolf’s ways. Wolf alters the way that McInerney sees the world, but he can’t change himself entirely and ends up cheating. Obviously, Wolf does not forgive him. McInerney is now without a love and a best friend. This finally makes him realize the err in his ways but it is too late. Tearjerker. #3 box office spot because there isn’t a happy ending.

James Frey and Zadie Smith

“That’s the True Story”

– Off beat comedy about two loners with kooky pasts that find each other while Smith is at the lowest point of her life. At first she scoffs at the thought of being tied to a man with such a bad reputation. As time goes on, she sees that one mistake in his past can’t be enough to deny her love. They bring the best out of each other and the plot line ignores the fact that Smith is light years better looking (and more talented) than Frey. This movie bombs at the box office. No one wants to see Frey make love.
