Books on Court, on Court Street in Brooklyn is a great independent bookstore. Also Shakespeare & Co. is a beloved local chain. BookCulture, up near Columbia is also pretty good.

If you want used book stores, there’s a great one called Freebird on Columbia Street in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Presumably you already know about the Strand.

check out 192 Books and McNally Jackson….both are good and both also have good author events. Also, Matt’s suggestion of Books on Court is a must. And be sure to check the rare book room at the strand for autographed copies, first editions, etc.

There’s one going down 8th Av., where ir becomes Jane Street or something like that. Well it’s right beside the Chocolate Bar on your right side when going downtown.
You can tell I’m not a local.

There I saw the most amazing Edward Gorey book… I still don’t know why I didn’t buy it.

The best bookstore in the city is St. Mark’s, at 9th Street and Third Avenue. It’s open until midnight every night.
