    I was assigned to do a book report in fourth grade and I foolishly selected this book. A difficult read for a little sprout, I remember that. Nostalgically I think I enjoyed it, but at the time it was a nightmare.

    Your copy? Looks ancient, sans 160 years of revisions. Maybe a first draft. Check for ambergris stains in the binding.

      HA! I just bought it! I think it’s meant to look like that, it feels pretty new and looks shiny on the inside. Aren’t books the best when they look antiquated?

        Shiny, because of all the coal residue and blubber on the inside? It may not have the odour of the high seas, I hope it at least has that old-book smell. Like, really old. It looks like it came from the Library of Alexandria. : )

    Oh God why? There is so much NON-action in this book. Worst punishment as an English major, reading this book.
