The Secret History (Caution: Spoilers)
The Secret History by Donna Tartt is now one of my favorite books. @erinmalone suggested it to me and I should be thanking her everyday for doing so. Although, the part where Julian finds out the letter is from where Henry and Bunny stayed in Italy shocked me so hard I had a weird feeling after that. I felt like I had been caught!
Yes, a BOOK gave me a guilty conscience. And where have we heard of this before? The oft-referred to (in The Secret History) Crime and Punishment. I wrote about this feeling once before, the “pit in your stomach books”. When the author is so amazing that you feel like you’ve committed the crime as well.
This is a heavy read, much more than normal thrillers. But then again, it’s more an examination of the power of group rule overwhelming your personal morals and the psychological consequences.
By the way, isn’t Donna Tartt just as you’d expect her?
