I Do It, Too

Posted in book porn by Lauren Leto on February 2, 2010

But I’m trying to be aware of it – and STOP.

I’m talking about the overuse of “just”. Is it because we want to sound “oh so nonchalant” or is it a verbal tic? Go on twitter and search “just”, then say the tweets in your head WITHOUT the “just”. They probably sound better!

Why can’t we just stop? It doesn’t make our writing better, it makes it sound worse.

I totally know just what you mean. Like, there are some words we just way over use. Like all the time. It just needs to stop. Right?

Can we throw in “literally” too? It’s way overused, and nobody uses it correctly. Like, let’s just literally stop using both these words.

Ok, I’m going to start writing down a list of all the TOTALLY OVERUSED WORDS that just need to stop. Literally. In an ironic way.

Word. “I mean” has got to go too.

I have often railed against Just in the workplace, especially when bosses and clients tell us to “just make a new version” or “Just switch all the colours”, as if it’s an instant task with no effort required.

I try never to use it, but sometimes I do. Same with “like”, but let’s not start that whole debate.

Another one that gets me: sentences that begin with “actually” for no apparent reason.

    “seriously”, too !

I would be satisfied to see the masses get a handle on your/you’re and their/there/they’re. Besides, I actually think that irony is just badass.

‘that’ is another word inaccurately overused. That that should be a problem to me is something that i am convinced that needs to be added to that list of yours that you are making.
