Hardest Scenes to Write

Posted in book porn by Lauren Leto on December 18, 2009

What are the hardest scenes to write for you guys? Personally, I tend to agonize over the climax scenes. Nothing seems dramatic enough.

On Monday my short story will be on the Fiction 500. It’s an excerpt from the novel I’m working on and I had to cut out whole paragraphs to get the section down to 500 characters but I’m excited to see what everyone thinks of it.

At some point today, the Boing Boing Literary Mash Up contest winner will be announced. I mashed up “He’s Just Not That Into You” with “The Great Gatsby”. You can find my entry in the comments section of that link, my username is laurenleto. I don’t think I did that great of a job though, some of those entries are amazing!

The climax can be difficult, but I have more of a problem with dialog. To me it just seems stiff and unreal, and I’m never quite satisfied with anything.

Oh you know what always bothers me? If I put “said” or “told” too many times in a row after the dialogue. I’m like, “Noo not everyone just ‘says’ something!”.

Yes! Exactly! Funny how I don’t notice that when I’m reading, though. It doesn’t stand out so much then.

I know! I think it is a good sign though when you judge your own writing more harshly than others!
