Pit in Your Stomach Books

Crime and PunishmentCamus

Pit in your stomach books. Maybe it’s only a pit in MY stomach. Either way, both these novels (that coincidentally both deal with gruesome crimes and sympathetic protagonists so this might be a glimpse into my psyche a bit) give me the chills. I just felt awful when I read them. But I loved them. Feeling bad for people who are bad jolts your system a bit, I think. Dostoevsky achieved this also with Notes from the Underground. The Underground Man was a thoroughly reprehensible human but you felt his pain when he yells at Liza that he “can’t be good”.

Other books like this include: The Phantom of the Opera.
